Changing Attitudes Through Music Choices

Changing attitudes through music helps us take a tough time and bring in some light. Finding the music that lights your heart can be key to getting through the storms.

I sold Cutco knives in college. On my way to any demo, I would play the same music to get me focused and excited.

Driving soothed my heart when I was younger. As I drove around the backroads, windows down, I had music that made me want to sing along, blasting on the stereo.

Changing Attitudes Start with the Mind

My mindset matters. What I put into my mind will play a huge part in how I think and behave. If I want to change my attitude, then changing what I hear will give me a boost.

When our third pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, I struggled to find hope. My son, who was three at the time, brought me a CD player with a song queued up. “God says you need to hear this,” he told me as he handed it to me. It was “Faith to Be Strong” by Andrew Peterson.

I played the song over and over, and with each listening, hope grew a little stronger.

Lifted Up With Music

Music helps me get through those times when it would otherwise be impossible. Sometimes, the perfect song sneaks up on me, and other times, I’m searching for hope. There is just something about music that can make any moment just a little better.

I’m very eclectic when it comes to music – which really shouldn’t be all that surprising since I’m not exactly normal in other aspects of my life. It can be old, new, country, rap, or whatever form it needs to take. As long as the music is good, the lyrics are solid (and tell some sort of story), and it preferably has a beat you can dance to, then I’m a happy camper.

The music that lights your heart will be different for you than it is for me. It will be different in different seasons. Keep listening until your heart lights up, and be okay with letting go of the things that don’t.

More Songs for Changing Attitudes

Flipping through stations on an errand run the other day, I got the privilege of hearing “If You’re Going Through Hell” by Rodney Atkins for the first time. It has a catchy tune and a fun beat. The next time I heard it was when I really started to think. The last line of the chorus was the one that kept spinning through my head.

It was the perfect reminder to keep going no matter how things might look or feel, and the words feed my creativity for changing attitudes from negative to positively determined.
