Learning to Balance the Time
Deb – over at Freelance Writing Jobs – posted an article today about how she spends her down time. At the end she asked about how we each spend our own time away from the daily grind. I was stumped. There is down time in my life, but I don’t think I spend it wisely.
It would be easy to blame my frivolous spending on the heat – after all it is Alabama in August. No one in their right mind would want to be outside right now. But since we have already established time and again that I’m not in my right mind and that I’m actually quite peculiar then I can’t very well use that excuse.
The truth is that I have let lazy become a huge part of my life. Even with three kids to keep up with, I still spend too much time watching the television instead of being with my family (or reading a good book). There was a time in my life when I was lucky if I slowed down for anything. I was always in full “go mode.â€
I spend a great deal of time working on balancing out family budget. The irony is that we can always make more money. There is no way to make more time. I need to spend more effort budgeting my time. For the next week I’m going to begin tackling that endeavor.
1. I am committed to turning off the television – for me and for my kids. I think that an occasional television show here and there is fine. But anything more than 4 to 6 hours each week is just too much.
2. Instead of turning on the television when I need a break, I will take a walk. If the heat is too much to bear then I will read a book or work on a puzzle (I use to LOVE doing puzzles).
3. I will keep a calendar of events with me so that I can tell at a glance what I need to do (and then plan around it).
It’s a start, but I know there is much more that I can do. Getting my time budgeted correctly is not going to happen over night. I’ve taught myself some bad habits and I have to break those habits and exchange them for something good, positive and uplifting. Getting there will be a process, but that process has to start now!
