How a Book Review of Ordering Your Private World Changed My Focus
“You’re so organized.”
If I had a dollar for every time someone looked at my notebook, my menu, or some other aspect of my life then I would a rich woman. Of course, I could also double that money if I got paid for every time my husband rolled around laughing at that concept.
In some ways, I am organized and focused.
In other ways, I am . . . “Squirrel!”
I know the value of having order. I firmly believe that everything was created with an order and a purpose. When I am out of order, I give my power (and ultimately my resources) to chaos.
When I received the email for a chance to review the Revised and Updated edition of “Ordering Your Private World” by Gordon MacDonald, I said “yes” without hesitation. This is something right up my alley AND it included a study guide – which is something I strive to include in my writing so I like to see how others are doing it.
In other words, I was looking at it as a learning tool for my own writing. Little did I know that I was going to gain so much more from the words in that cover!
From the “Preface,” Mr. MacDonald had my attention. When he wrote that people often told him how nice it must be to be a naturally ordered person, I could relate. When he talked about hitting a wall, I think I jumped up and shouted.
I can make lists. I can write schedules. I can create plans. Until I get my heart and mind in order I will struggle to get anything else in line.
About the Book
“Ordering Your Private World” is only 215 pages (this include the Preface but not the Study Guide), but it reads easy. I was able to stay focused even while reading in a noisy room. There are some amazing nuggets and points throughout the book, so you may want to keep a notebook handy if you aren’t one for writing in the margins or using a highlighter in your books.
About the Study Guide
The Study Guide portion of the book is at the back and broken down by chapters. It would make a simple study for a small group or Sunday School class. I just recommend having a notebook to write your thoughts and experiences.
