Getting it done is as simple as just doing it.
This concept began starting to make sense to me after almost thirteen years of marriage. I’ll admit I’m a procrastinator by nature and I married a closet procrastinator. If we could put it off until tomorrow, we would – and tomorrow stretched on forever.
When the kids started coming, we had even more reasons to put things off. There just wasn’t enough time in the day to do what we needed to do AND watch the kids.
What’s Your Schedule?
It was a book that began to change my thoughts and to break the cycle of procrastination that I had in my life. Thin Within had me make a schedule – according to Webster that simply means a list – of things that I did during my day, hour by hour. Give it a try right now and see if you are wasting as much time as I was managing to waste. I won’t say what stole most of my time, but I will tell you it wasn’t the kids.
(So you don’t think it was something too horrible, it was JUST television. Anything and everything that happened to be on, from the news to Judge Judy, had my attention and once that thing came on then it was staying on).
After realizing that I did have time to do things, I decided to prioritize what I needed to get done. I made a new schedule. (Whew, just writing that word can be tough) I made a chart for the week with blanks for calls to make, errands to run, chores to do, and correspondence to get out.
Making the schedule was actually rather easy for me. It was the next step that tripped me up then and continues to trip me up now and again. I decided to actually follow the schedule that I took the time to make out.
A schedule helps you do what you planned to do.
“Do you mean you are doing what you planned to do?” Yes. What a concept, huh?
Seriously, it doesn’t happen very often, but there are those rare moments when I actually cross everything off of my schedule for that day. It feels good to know that my time was used wisely and completely, and I’m always surprised that I have time leftover just for myself.
The rest of the time it’s more of a managed chaos – the kids want something, the husband wants something, maybe it’s the dog this time. Life has a way of derailing my well-intentioned schedule. I just push things to the next day and go on. It’s not a law, it’s a list.
The schedule doesn’t dictate what I can and can’t do during my day; it simply helps me get through life without losing site of the bigger picture. Making the schedule just gives me goals to accomplish and a direction to go. It also gives me the satisfaction of getting done those things I challenge myself to do.
