Thought of the Day – It’s JUST a Game

Thought of the Day, April 12, 2017

No matter how you dress it up, it is still just a game.

The referee pulled up next to me and got out of his truck. I laughed and told him that if I didn’t like the way the game was called then I’d know where to find him. I went back to work waiting for our turn on the field.

He returned to his truck about thirty minutes later – which made me laugh again. “Did you get tired of it all and decide to go home?”

He joined my laughter. “I only had to call one inning. I had just finished calling a high school game.”

“I bet that’s rough.”

“Actually, these games are harder. It seems the younger the kids the worse the parents.”

I knew what he was talking about. I sit in the car for most of my sons games because I believe we are there to play our best not just to win. I comment on both teams – always trying to keep it positive. I think it is the swim coach in my seeping out around the edges.

It turns out not everyone appreciates my willingness to see both sides.

It is a game. Even if you are professional getting paid to PLAY it, it is still a game. I can’t help but wonder what a difference there would be if everyone recognized that it was a game and then determined simply to do their personal best.
