Living a Perfect Life

“I am perfect.” I have said it in the past but always with a qualifier. Today, I am saying it with a new boldness. I AM perfect.

I started down this path of proclaiming perfect many years ago during a bible study. I had been mulling over the idea and the question (rhetorical though it may have seemed to him) prompted me to step out in the idea.

His response was not unexpected. Most people I have encountered refuse to accept perfect people. You have to do more to be perfect. You have to learn more to be perfect. You have to give more to be perfect. Your works and your actions make you perfect.

The few people that I have met that recognize this path of perfect will qualify it. “I was perfect when I woke up this morning, but then I got out of bed.” You can never be perfect in the flesh.

To the first group, I try to explain that perfect is not what they think. The world has defined perfect as without flaw – like the Hope Diamond. The world wants to make perfect to be something without mistakes – like that 100 the child received on the test. The Scripture defines perfect as complete. Even Noah Webster offered as his first expansion in the definition – complete.

Perfect is complete. If I were to say to you that I am complete – or whole, would that be okay. I think even the first group would probably accept that statement, or maybe just shrug and go on about their business. You can be whole or complete – just stop saying you are perfect.

To the second group, I agree with them. I will never be perfect in the flesh. Flesh is not perfect since the fall. The good news is that the story does not stop with the fall. We have been redeemed. We have been recreated. We have been made whole. It was done by another in us the moment we accepted Christ as a personal Savior. We are perfect because Christ perfected us.
