Random Word Fun – Saturday, April 15, 2017
Writer’s block garners much attention when writers come together. It matters little what industry, what focus, or what level the writers may be. It seems that “block” plagues them all.
I defy writer’s block – in part because I don’t believe it exists. I have found that if I write – something, anything, anywhere – then the words begin to flow where I need them.
This Random Word Fun came from the need to break free of the “writer’s block” label.
Here’s how it works:
I have a jar of words on the desk. I will draw five words. You set a time and for 30 minutes you write something – anything – but the catch is you must use these five words.
You can do some editing AFTER you finish the writing but the idea is to have fun.
Share your words on your social media or blog and then be sure to link to them below.

My Random Word Fun for April 15, 2017
Teach the Children Well – Just Not too Well
“Everyone needs a duck.” I was sharing the breakthrough a friend of mine had and the words were out of my mouth before I could catch them.
My son grinned – not the sweet, innocent grin you cherish from your children. This was the evil, “I’ve got you now” grin that reminds you that you may have taught them too well.
“But does she have a lemonade stand?”
And there it was – the music of “The Duck Song” began dancing through my head – or more of a pounding really. It would not be easy to expel. It never is.
It was my own fault. I managed to paint myself in a corner from years of word play with my children. Now they were using those same skills to torment me – especially on those days when I lined up the hit so nicely.
I groaned.
He laughed.
I began to smile. Yes, the music of “The Duck Song” still pounded in my head, but the connection I had with my son made it almost bearable. It is good that we can play and laugh together. Joy comes from that laughter and play and Joy helps make the sun shine a little brighter and the day a little better.
Enjoy the people around you . . . for that matter, enjoy the journey that you are on. It may not be perfect. It may get invaded by a duck or two. It may not even move forward the way (or at the speed) you desire. Enjoy it anyway.
One tip though – NEVER, NEVER, NEVER let you kids know what bothers you because they will find a way to use it against you.
