Who Can You Really Trust?
You can’t just trust Jesus.
You have to do something.
Even the Bible says that only someone who works gets fed.
Of course, the Bible also says, “Judas hanged himself” “go and do likewise.”
(Okay, those two phrases aren’t located together, although they are in Scripture, and they come from a joke my dad loved to tell).
The point?
If you are willing to work at it, you can make Scripture say anything you want it to say. But just because you use words from the Word doesn’t mean it IS the Word.
The Word of God isn’t a choose-your-own-adventure book. It isn’t designed to be taken a few phrases at a time.
It is one Word, compiled across 66 books.

And Jesus summed it up simply in Matthew 6 when He directed us to seek God and His righteousness first – above everything else. That’s why Jesus summarized the first and greatest commandment this way, “love the Lord your God with all of your heart, all of your soul, and all of your mind.”
When we are loving God with all that we have and all that we are, there isn’t room for anything else. And when you are all in with God, you begin to recognize that there is nothing you can do – no, not ANYTHING – that only God does what gets done.
My husband and I have been married for over three decades. Even before we were married, I knew that he loved Auburn football. I have since learned other things:
(I literally feel my husband rolling his eyes at me right now … reach out and ask him why. It’s one of his favorite stories.)
The point?
I have invested time and energy learning about my husband and building relationship with him. I know that sharing the story above – even just in reference – is going to annoy him (and secretly make him smile).
The more you build a relationship with someone, the more you understand how to please them, make them laugh, and DEFINITELY annoy them – I’ve spent three decades perfecting that last one.
God wants us to be in relationship with Him even more than I am in relationship with my husband. He built a path to relationship through His Word.
And when you know Him and you are all in with that relationship then you absolutely can JUST TRUST JESUS.
- John 10:11 declares that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who will lay down His life for His sheep … and He did.
- Matthew 28:20 shows Jesus reminded His followers that He will always be with them (with us) even to the end of age.
- In Luke 12, Jesus reminds us not to be anxious about anything … that means NOT ANYTHING AT ALL.
- In Psalm 37 (one of my FAVORITE Psalms), we are told that we need to commit our way to the Lord. And we need to do it in full trust (complete trust without trying to take it back from Him), and GOD WILL ACT.
But in case there is any doubt about why you can trust God and just trust Jesus:
- Exodus 14:14 – The Lord will fight for you. You only have to hold your peace.
- Deuteronomy 20:4 – The Lord goes with you to fight against your enemies and to save you.
- Psalm 34:17 – The righteous cry to the Lord and the Lord hears and delivers them from their troubles.
But wait …. there’s more!
- Zechariah 4:6 – Not by might and not by power, but by My Spirit.
- 1 Samuel 17:47 – The battle is the Lord’s.
- 2 Chronicles 32:8 – With us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.
- Joshua 10:11 – and as they (the enemy) fled from Israel, the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them and they died.
I can keep going. Because trusting God and trusting Jesus is ESSENTIAL.
Just Trust Jesus
I don’t do it.
You don’t do it.
It is God who completes everything He starts in us. We just benefit from it because we are in relationship with the Master.
So when things get crazy … because the world IS crazy … just remember that you can JUST TRUST JESUS.
I would go so far as to say that trust in Jesus is a matter of life and death.
