“I hope it will happen.”
He said it.
He didn’t mean it.
And I knew it.
He was “hoping” but he didn’t have hope.
Between World Hope and God Hope
There’s a difference.
- I hope I’ll wake up and the scales will show that I’m back at my ideal weight.
- I hope that my long-lost relative will leave me a boat load of money.
- I hope Dana Perino will share my book on The Five.
But that’s world hope … wishing and hoping are equal here.
When you dig into the Truth of God’s Hope, it’s a deeper, more powerful story.
I could have told him all of that.
But I didn’t.
I dismissed his comment. “But do you believe?”
I failed my husband in that conversation. It was a great opportunity to share the Truth of Hope – one that dispels the wishy-washy-platitudes of the world’s hope.
And it ate at my heart.
Sharing the Power of God Hope
When the insurance company didn’t make our home whole again, my hope broke – because my hope had been in the insurance company.
When the jury found in favor of the insurance company (or at least split the decision leaving us without a path forward), my hope broke because it was founded in the jury doing the “right” thing.
What my husband was hoping for was Scripturally sound. What I should have said was, “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.” Because THAT is what hope is. It’s a tethering of my heart to God’s Truth.
And I get there by being so invested in God’s Truth that the world’s distractions can’t shake me from it.
