Keep Feelings at Bay: 5 Ways to Remember the Truth
Feelings are NOT the answer – no matter how loud they are or how strong they, well, feel!
We are to enjoy the positive feelings:
Dancing even when others are watching (and even if the song in only in our head).
Singing out loud – and strong – and of good things.
Talking to the animals or making up conversations for them.
Or laughing at our own mistakes, trips, and not-quite-perfect moments.
But NEVER let the feelings drive – they will steer you into a ditch.

Feelings
are NEVER
the right answer!

When Feelings Show Up
I went to sleep in Truth. I woke up with the whispers of emotions: worry, fear, doubt!
“You won’t make it.”
“They don’t like you enough.”
“The deadline will run you over.”
And that was just to start.
Well, not exactly start. Before I roll out of bed, I thank God for the glorious day and I say some prayers of protection for me and our family and our neighbors and I put on the Armor of God.
But it didn’t take long for feelings to slither their way in through the kinks in my armor.
It took prayer and Scripture to put the feelings back in their place.
Truth silences the feelings.
Since the feelings keep showing up, I have to keep investing in the Truth so that I can keep the right focus when feelings show up.
Knowing Feelings Are Not the Answer
- Stand bold in not comfortable.
- Hold to joy through the not happy.
- See God when not accepted by man.
- Lean on God when you’re not strong.
- Listen to the Word when the heart goes against it.
I learned about the alligators at the lakeside of the Gulf State Park after I signed the contract to be a LIFEGUARD at the lake.
For the record, lifeguards are expected to get in the water to save people from drowning.
Alligators were not what I had expected.
“Oh, don’t worry. We haven’t seen an alligator in three years.”
I was on the stand my first day for three hours before I spotted my first gator. It was about a foot and a half long, but over the next couple of weeks, bigger ones were spotted.
I’m pretty sure they waited until my shift.
One afternoon, I watched as a fairly drink driven man attempted to canoe. His balance – or lack there of – flipped the canoe and he wasn’t wearing a life jacket.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the wind had picked up and it was blowing his canoe, his only way of staying afloat, far from him.
I waded into the tea color, alligator invested waters and watched the scene unfold.
I kept hoping he would catch the canoe so I wouldn’t have to go any deeper.
FEAR kept me from doing what I knew I needed to do.
I left that day and found another job.
Kick the Feelings
If fear is leading, change your path.
If emotions are driving, you’ll end up in a ditch.
If feelings are in charge, you’ll miss the abundant life.
You are called in purpose and on purpose and when the Truth leads then you will walk out that purpose and straight into your exceeding abundant beyond all you can think or imagine life.
