Being Friends With God: 5 Ways He Shows Friendship
We are called to be friends with God.
Some days, I’m all in—Bible open first thing, heart seeking, mind alert for His voice.
Some days, I’m a fickle friend who prefers to stay alone eating chocolate chip cookies and potato chips (because you have to wash down the sweet with the salty and then the salty with the sweet, right).
Even in sharing about how I can be fickle, I got distracted.
But here’s the truth I HAVE to keep coming back to:
God wants to be friends. He is literally creating a path. We are called to be friends with God.
God wants me to come BOLDLY before His throne of Grace. God wants me to be so comfortable with Him that I can call Him, Daddy.
And a close relationship with God doesn’t mean I lose any respect or awe or wonder for Him – it just expands it.

What does that look like?
Being Friends with God
God isn’t hiding – Deuteronomy 4:29 You will find Him when you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
God has given us a heart for relationship with Him – Jeremiah 24:7 God says He gives us a heart to know Him so that we will be His people.
God loves us – Again, Jeremiah 31:3 has the Lord appearing and saying, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with an unfailing kindness.” And of course, John 3:16 For God so loved . . .
God calls to us – Matthew 11:28 has Jesus saying, “Come to me.” And throughout the New Testament, Jesus is calling people to “come, follow me.”
God wants to be friends – John 15:15 Jesus declares, “ I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his master’s business. I have called you a friend, for everything that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you.”
Getting to Know You
The world wants to talk you out of your purpose and the world is loud.
If we are going to hear God’s whisper over the shouts of the world, we have to know His voice. It takes knowing Him to know His voice that well.
When I first met my husband, I invested a lot of time and energy trying to be around him. Some might even say I stalked him – for three years. Then we dated, didn’t date, liked each other, didn’t like each other, on again, off again . . . and all the while I was getting to know more about him.
And I knew his voice because he mattered.
If I walked into a party, I could hear his voice over the roar of the crowd. I even heard him over the crowd in New Orleans on New Year’s Eve . . . and I didn’t even know he was there until I heard his voice.
But do I hear God’s voice over the world?
Not without the investment to know Him so I know His voice.
It’s a Life Or Death Matter
When I walk with God, I walk in His abundance. When I walk with the world, I walk in its lack.
When I choose God’s Way, I choose life. When I choose the world’s way, I choose death.
When I follow God, I have His blessings. When I follow the world, I have its curses.
Being a friend of God means walking with Him, choosing Him, and following Him in obedience all the way to His Abundant Life.
Being a friend of God should be an easy choice – one that God makes all the easier because HE does the work for us. We just have to choose.
