Making Money with a Blog

There are a number of bloggers on the internet who make a living from their blogs. I am not one of them – yet! πŸ˜‰ A recent article at All Freelance Writers about making money as a blogger got me thinking about whether I want to make a living from my blogs and just what I need to do to if that is the direction I want to go. Currently all of my income comes from writing for others.

Jennifer Mattern, who wrote the article about making money blogging points out that not all bloggers are in it for the money. Although the truth is that very few people would turn down the opportunity to make money with their blogs, there are probably even fewer who are willing to put in the time and effort to make that happen.

Between writing my blog posts, doing my writing assignments, homeschooling, keeping up with an almost three year old and maintaining the house, I wonder some days how I find the time to sleep. Adding in the time to monetize my blog just seems impossible.

Her points and suggestions were valid no matter which direction I decide to push my blog. Building a better blog requires finding the right niche, having a passion for the material and building up expertise through that passion. It also requires a consistency that I struggle with in all aspects of my life.

Secretly I am waiting for some agent or publisher to recognize my enormous talent and offer me a book deal. While I’m waiting for the big bucks to fall into my lap I will continue to work on the bones of my blog – creating solid content and developing connections and relationships in the blogging community.

  • Amen! I actually sat in on a training session last week for making money on my blog. I started my original political one almost 5 years ago, and it hasn’t changed much in terms of content. Do I want to interrupt the flow of valuable news in exchange for $$? Probably not. However, i am also blogging for others now, too, and much of what they do is for profit, which is how I get paid. Which means I’d better learn – quickly – how to combine the money making with the solid content. I just don’t think I can let go of the latter for the former, though. I’d never be able to live with myself!

  • Hi Kathryn –

I’m back and raring to go. In fact, yesterday was productive. I accomplished 4 major tasks: attended and helped run our writing group, worked out at the gym, traveled to a book signing an hour away and met some awesome writers, and took a dry run to the County Courthouse. I have Jury Duty there. It’s nice to know where you’re going.

As far as blogging for profit, I’m just blogging to connect with other writers, help them out, and develop some discipline by keeping a schedule. Like you, I don’t have the time or energy for anything else.

Thanks for the migraine tip. I’ll have to try it.

    Blessings,
