Breaking Control of Feelings
Feelings can be powerful forces. The more feelings pile on, the more justified you feel in giving in to the forces.
The day my mother died is branded in my brain. I remember the sounds, the weather, little details of life emblazoned on my heart because of the feelings that accompanied them.
One of the things I remember most is the man across the street cutting his grass. I couldnβt imagine how anyone could be cutting their grass during that moment.
What was he thinking?
But that thought was my feelings talking. Feelings donβt make sense. Feelings donβt align with truth. Feelings are real, but they arenβt always right.
Before you give your feelings the driverβs seat, take a moment to breathe deep and find your calm. Once you have a sense of calm, ask yourself these questions:
- Will it matter tomorrow?
- Will it fix the moment?
- Would I say something/do something if I wasnβt feeling what Iβm feeling?
Feelings happen, but just because the feelings are there doesnβt mean you have to give into them.
Be intentional with your actions particularly when your feelings are flaring up.
Challenge for Intentional Actions
Managing Feelings
Take a breath.
Wait for calm.
Determine the better action.
Feelings will demand their way, but make sure the way is the better way for your journey.
